Apple Acquires AI and Computer Vision Startup Datakalab
Apple has recently acquired Datakalab, a Paris-based startup specializing in AI compression and computer vision technology. Known for their expertise in developing low-power, efficient deep learning algorithms for on-device applications, Datakalab brings valuable innovation to Apple’s portfolio. The startup's technology transforms images into anonymized statistical data instantly, ensuring privacy by design.
This acquisition, reported to the European Commission, hints at Apple’s ambitions to enhance AI features in future iOS releases and possibly integrate advanced vision capabilities into their Vision Pro project. Although the founders did not join Apple, several employees did, indicating a significant talent acquisition.
Datakalab previously collaborated with the French government to monitor mask usage during the pandemic and has worked with major partners like Disney. This move underscores Apple's commitment to advancing its AI and computer vision capabilities, positioning itself strongly in the tech industry's evolving landscape.
