Character.AI Introduces Voice Calling with AI Avatars
Character.AI has launched an innovative feature that allows users to engage in real-time voice calls with AI avatars. Previously limited to text-based interactions, the new "Character Call" feature supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. This enhancement opens up various applications such as language practice, job interview preparation, and immersive role-playing experiences.
The rollout of Character Call follows extensive testing, where over 3 million users made more than 20 million calls. The company designed the feature to ensure a seamless user experience, with reduced latency and an easy call initiation process via a simple tap. Additionally, users can switch effortlessly between calling and texting and can interrupt the AI mid-sentence if necessary.
Character.AI had previously introduced "Character Voices" in March, enabling one-on-one voice chats with AI avatars. This update has expanded the voice library to over a million unique voices, crafted by both the Character.AI team and its user community. Despite some user complaints about changing AI personalities, the company clarified that any behavioral differences were likely due to ongoing testing phases, not major changes to the system.
This new feature marks a significant step in the evolution of human-AI interactions, demonstrating the growing potential of AI technologies in creating more natural and intuitive communication methods. As AI continues to advance, features like Character Call are set to become more integrated into daily activities, enhancing user experiences across various domains.
